50 Movies you need to watch

Published on Sunday, January 24, 2010 at 9am

Here's a list of 50 movies you need to watch, and in the order you should watch them. It's been set up so the more important ones are at the top and the less important ones are at the bottom. None the less, you must watch them all.

I'd recommend printing this page, marking out the ones you've seen and then marking out the rest as you go. Obviously you're going to have seen some of these already and most likely have disliked them. That's fine, it's not a list of the best movies of all time, just a list of ones to see.

Some of them are epic and represent what film should strive to be, while others suffer from cases of extreme uniqueness, and then there are those that were put in simply to take away from the pretentiousness of being a list. Feel free to respond at the bottom with your comments on which ones you've seen and liked, also write in how many of the 50 you've already seen.

Subtract I Heart Huckabees and add Snakes on a Plane and we have a perfect match.

Note: Kevin Smith films were not allowed on this list as I would have ended up repeating the same ones over and over again until it hit 50

It's weird, I watch a fair amount of movies, but the only ones of these I've seen are Anchorman, Squid and the Whale, Little Miss Sunshine, and the Life Aquatic, although I have seen parts of a few others.

There are three movies missing from this list: they are not as "art-housey" as some of the films on this list, but I am sorry, I can't place Empire Records (which I have seen and liked) above Blazing Saddles, The Big Lebowski, or Oh Brother Where Art Thou?

Wristcutters was Great!

And all of Detective's choices should be on there... ESPECIALLY Blazing Saddles, best movie ever.

And I have only seen about... 15 of these.
